Situation in Kenya:
Despite above-average economic growth, youth unemployment in Kenya is very high and only around 10% of young people find work in the formal sector. Women are particularly disadvantaged and at greater risk of poverty. The national strategy "Kenya Vision 2030" aims to develop Kenya into an emerging middle-income country by 2030. A major challenge is the defect of practically trained experts who meet the needs of the economy, particularly in key sectors such as energy and sustainable technologies.

Cooperations:
The project is managed by the Hessian State Centre for Technology Training (HLfT), an institution of the state of Hesse with many years of expertise in the further training of vocational school teachers. Partners on the Kenyan side are the Kenya School of TVET (KS TVET) and national vocational training institutions. The project is co-financed by the Hessian Ministry of Economics, Energy, Transport, Housing and Rural Areas. The objective is to work with Kenyan stakeholders to modernise vocational training and develop future-oriented teaching methods in the Green TVET department.

Project goals and measures:
The project strengthens the qualification of vocational training personnel in Kenya's TVET system in order to offer practical lessons in the departments of renewable energy and energy efficiency. A particular focus is on the promotion of women and gender-sensitive design of technical and vocational education and training. The measures include:

  1. Development of further training courses geared towards the labour markent: Training courses on energy efficiency and renewable energy are being developed and aligned with the requirements of the Kenyan economy.
  2. „Greening-TVET – Energy“ experience centre: Modelled on successful STEM strategies, an experiential space is being designed to enable hands-on learning. Its use is being trialled through specialist training courses and the room is also available to other educational institutions.
  3. Multiplier programme: 24 people will be trained as trainers (12 each in energy efficiency and renewable energy). The participants undergo an English-language training programme, supplemented by gender-sensitive management training.

The project contributes to the development of a future-oriented TVET system that trains experts for the energy transition, empowers women and supports Kenya's economic objectives.
