South Africa is the largest CO2 emitter in Africa and has set a target to reduce transport sector emissions by 5% by the year 2050. Electric vehicles - including electric cargo bikes - are cited as a critical technology for reducing emissions.

The aim of the project is to develop and test the prototype of an e-cargo bike as a demonstration project. In this way, the project contributes to the establishment of electrically supported cargo bikes as a climate-friendly alternative to fossil-fueled vehicles in the transport of small goods.

Individual initiatives are already addressing the issue of e-mobility in the South African bicycle sector and have recognised the resulting potential. Because cycling is an important component of mobility in Bavaria, the Free State has a diverse landscape of actors and expertise in the field. Therefore, the South African and Bavarian partners can learn from each other in many ways during the project implementation.
