Supporting and improving infection diagnosis and control at the Mechnikov Hospital in Dnipro

The project supports the regional hospital in Dnipro, one of Ukraine’s largest and oldest medical facilities providing tertiary care and trauma treatment. The hospital serves as a triage centre for the treatment of wounded civilians, veterans and soldiers. Due to the current hostilities and the use of modern drones, the length of stay for individual casualties in the war zone is often between 24 and 48 hours. Upon arrival at Mechnikov Hospital, therapeutic treatment usually has to be initiated immediately. This frequently includes antibiotic therapy for infections. For emergency patients, a microbiological examination of wounds or infection diagnostics is carried out immediately. However, due to outdated equipment, the results of the laboratory tests are not available for 24 to 48 hours. As a result, targeted treatment of infections is often delayed. This reduces patients’ chances of recovery, particularly when the effects are already irreversible. It is therefore urgently necessary to increase the speed and effectiveness of infection diagnosis, as well as the prescription of appropriate anti-infective agents. Against this backdrop of need, the project will expand the hospital’s capacity in relation to infection diagnostics and control.
