Promotion of young talents in the water sector in Tanzania

Tanzania is severely affected by the impacts of climate change, in particular by rising sea levels, long periods of drought and unpredictable rainfall patterns that damage infrastructure, water supplies, agriculture and the ecosys­tem as a whole. At the same time, economic development, agricultural production and population growth is causing a dramatic increase in the demand for water. Despite strenuous efforts on the part of the Tanzanian Government and reforms in the water sector, the institutional, technical and HR capacities of water and sanitation companies, as well as provincial and municipal authorities, remain limited when it comes to improving water resource management.

The project therefore supplements the support provided by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in this area since 2004 with a training component for junior staff in the water sector. More precisely, the project provides practice-based training for Tanzanian junior managers from ministries, sectoral authorities and companies as part of a multi-week digital training course. Participants are thereby able to gain an understanding of modern approaches to water resource management from Lower Saxony.
