Support for the development of digital agro-meteorology in Rwanda for climate change adaptation
Due to rapid population growth and the associated intensive agricultural use of arable land, 40 % of the soils in Rwanda are significantly degraded (e.g. through erosion or acidification). The effects of climate change, including changing rainfall patterns and extreme dry periods, are exacerbating this development. Agriculture in Rwanda repeatedly suffers from extreme meteorological events and crop failures.
Against this background, digital weather forecasting solutions offer great potential to support the adaptation of agriculture to climate change. Precise, digital agrometeorological data make it possible to plan agricultural work processes at an early stage and make them more efficient. However, the majority of weather stations in Rwanda are currently still operated in analogue form, which can lead to delays in recording and inaccuracies (measurement and recording). The project supports Rwanda in establishing a digitalised agricultural meteorology.
